Class Field Trips

If you ever get the chance as a parent to volunteer for a School Field Trip I would highly recommend taking it. This is a once in a lifetime chance to visit with your childs whole class and you get to learn what types of children are socializing with your child.

You also get to watch your child interact with children. You get to see what your child enjoys, what makes him/her happy, what disappoints them and what type of child/children they desire to "hang" with.

What your child learns from you participating
Your child gets to see you interacting with other adult volunteers, the bus driver and teachers. They get to see how you handle yourself around 15+ school kids and most importantly they get to see how other children respond to you being on the trip.

This is a time of learning for both you and your child. This is a time to relax, enjoy the environment, and enjoy being with your child in a different setting.

Also, parents stop and think before you mention anything negative that might possibly be sweeping in. Remember these are adult thoughts and not thoughts that benefit children:
  • I hope you know I am taking a sick day for you
  • I hope you know that I am behind in my work so I can spend a day with you and your classmates
  • I am tired and would like it if you didn't make a lot of noise while we are on the bus
  • Add your own here

The point is that it's a privilege to be invited to join the group in a activity like this. This is a chance for you as a wonderful parent to enjoy your children. Remember this when you want to say something that might impact your child for the rest of their future. Trust me that if you mention something negative that is what they will remember for the rest of their lives and the story will be:

I remember my mom came on this field trip and it was the worst trip of my life. All she did was complain about how she was skipping work for me.

Children are sensitive. They wan't to know that you want them around, that you care about them and that you are sensitive to their differences. Make the day special without smothering them. And at the end of the trip let them know you enjoyed it and appreciated coming with them.
