How to make kids play-doh (play clay)

This is great for after school activities or during those long summer days. To create your play-doh follow these steps:

Play-Doh Recipe

1 cup of Salt
1/3 cup of water
1/2 cup of cornstarch
1/4 cup cold water
Food Coloring

Medium Saucepan mix 1 cup of salt and 1/3 cup of water over medium heat stirring occasionally for 3-4 minutes. It will resemble slushy snow. Mine began to boil or pop at the 3 1/2 minutes mark and removed it at this point. Remove from heat and add cornstarch and 1/4 cup cold water.

Adding Food Coloring
Either split this batch up or make several batches and color each batch. Red, Blue and Green are the common colors to create.

For ease of clean up I took the mashed potatoe like play doh and split it up on 4 paper plates.

Next I put on rubber gloves and mixed in the food coloring. I used quite a few drops of food coloring for deep colors.

The mixture cools quite quickly and even the older children can complete this stage (outside if weather conditions are favorable would be the best situation for children).

If you don't have paper plates you can knead the play-doh on a counter top that has been lightly dusted with cornstarch.

Storage:
Refrigerate in zip lock bags with a lightly wet paper towel or napkin.

Eating:
Eating the play doh is not highly recommended but since you know the ingredients are cornstarch, salt and water it's not serious if you find them licking their fingers. Kids will be kids and if you do see them eating it kindly remind them it's meant to be played with not eaten.

This is what the final product looks like and this is a double batch (2 cups of salt, 1 cup of corn starch etc). It really makes a lot and your kids are going to love it!
